Morgan Hill – If intensity and preparedness during a preseason scrimmage are any indication of how a team will do once the real thing starts, the San Benito High football team is on its way to a championship.
Competing in a four-team scrimmage hosted by Live Oak High in Morgan Hill on Friday night, the Haybalers were clearly the most impressive squad. Going up against their league opponent – the Acorns – along with Oak Grove and Silver Creek, San Benito dominated play on both sides of the ball.
Originally scheduled as a traditional scrimmage at Live Oak, the preseason event turned into a mini-jamboree of sorts after Oak Grove and Silver Creek signed on.
In the scrimmage’s format, each team’s offense and defense were matched up against each of the other teams in first seven-on-seven tag offensive drills, then full-squad, full-contact drills. The scrimmage lasted about two hours and though there was no score kept, the Balers had the best performance.
Led by junior quarterback Karson Klauer, the Baler offense moved the ball at will against all three opponents, while the San Benito defense was the stingiest unit on the field.
But perhaps the most impressive performers were Baler head coach Chris Cameron and his coaching staff, who bounded around exhorting their players to greater efforts, and extracting cheers and screams from the Balers before and after nearly every play.
After advancing to the Central Coast Section finals last season, San Benito looks poised for another strong season.
