San Benito is still chasing the elusive No. 2 spot in the Tri-County Athletic League golf race and Salinas and Gilroy provided more distance between themselves and the Haybalers in Monday’s league tournament at Salinas County Club.
For the second straight week, the Cowboys took second and the Mustangs grabbed third, while San Benito placed fourth for the third time in a row. Palma easily grabbed its third straight first-place finish. The ‘Balers score of 216 put them just behind Gilroy’s 214.
“That’s two weeks in a row now that Gilroy squeaked in front of us,” San Benito coach Andy Parra said.
Derell Aton and Joey Amaral led the way for the ‘Balers, each shooting a team-best 42. Chad Stanger (43), Robbie Sanchez (44) and Josh Greenwood (45) were all right behind them.
“We were really consistent today,” Parra said. “Tho se are the kind of number we wanted.”
While San Benito is still hoping to catch fire and get the league’s second berth to the Central Coast Section tournament, Salinas has begun to pull away the past two weeks.
The Cowboys finished a close second to Palma a week ago at their home course (Corral de Tierra) and their score of 205 on Monday was nine strokes better than third-place Gilroy.
“Salinas really has come on strong the last two weeks,” said Parra, who still has plenty of confidence in his young team.
“We don’t have a lot of varsity experience. We have six guys who didn’t play a single varsity match last year,” Parra said. “But I think they’ve had their time to adapt and get used to it. Now it’s just time to play. We can’t use that as an excuse anymore. I just feel the kids are too good of players and took good of kids to not make it to CCS this year.”
