With three freshmen starters, the Anzar girls basketball team lost its first game of the season 33-19 to Pajaro Valley on Monday.
Anzar took a lead in the first quarter in the low-scoring contest. But strong play by the Grizzlies in the second and third quarter put the game away.
Pajaro Valley outscored Anzar 24-5 in the two quarters to bury the Hawks.
Freshman Leslie Martinez led the Hawks in scoring with 8 points. Sophomore Delaney McKinney added 6 points for the Hawks.
“It’s the first year for a lot of the girls,” head coach Steve Duran said. “I expect them to continue to get better. We’ll get there.”
Anzar will host York on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the season’s second game.
