Dear Editor:

When more of the ranchers and farmers who care about their craft and its future in our county begin to understand the potential for the Development Credit Program included with the San Benito County Growth Control Initiative to actually save their lands for farming and compensate them as well, they will eventually embrace this process and help it to work.

The business of supporting our farmers is a complex issue and taking the development pressure off of their lands is an important first step.

The proponents of the current referendum effort have picked some strange allies in the realtors, Business Council, Chamber of Commerce, and other development interests if their goal is really to “protect our agricultural heritage!”

Why would these people be willing to commit hundreds of thousands of dollars to defeat this initiative?

Do they really want to farm?
