The city got itself into a mess with the Veterans Memorial Building and should fix the problems before handing them off to the nonprofit sector.

Many counties and cities throughout the nation organize community events to honor those lost in the terrorist attacks 11 years ago on Sept. 11. At the very least, citizens have come to expect their local government institutions to lower American flags to half-staff.  

The American Legion San Benito Post 69 is hoping to increase the number of members with a membership drive at the Hollister Street Festival and Car Show on Saturday.

1. Annual Rib Cook-off: San Juan Bautista will host the annual Best Ribs in the West competition May 19 and 20 on Third Street, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Six teams will be vying for the title. Admission is free to the public and food will be for sale. Visitors can get in on the action by casting a vote for the People’s Choice Award on Saturday. Official judging will take place Saturday at 3 p.m., with winners announced Sunday at 1 p.m. There will be arts and craft booths as well as entertainment. Details: 775-324-6435.

American Legion Post 69 Commander Joe Love on Friday recalled his own service to the country decades ago in the Army and Air Force, and remembered asking himself at times, "Why am I beating myself up like this?"
