After a year of injuries and unexpected struggles, the San Benito wrestling team enters the 2012 season with increased optimism and belief that it can do much better than last year’s 3-3 dual meet record.

After spending the past year practicing out of the Maze Middle School gym, the Hollister Warriors youth wrestling program - and its 35 wrestlers - will open a permanent home later this month - possibly alongside the San Benito High wrestling program.

The San Benito wrestling season ended in quick fashion for the Balers at the 2012 Central Coast Section championship tournament Friday and Saturday in San Jose.

One year ago, at the Central Coast Section wrestling championship, freshman wrestler Athena McGoff had to watch from afar.

It didn't go as planned for the San Benito wrestling squad Saturday at Palma High in the Tri-County Athletic League championships, but the Balers will be represented well at the Central Coast Section tournament Feb. 24 and Feb. 25 in San Jose.

After a season where the San Benito wrestling squad finished with a 3-3 record in league dual matches, the Balers look to start the postseason on a much brighter note.

Thirty-eight former Gilroy High wrestlers and coaches were honored prior to Wednesday night's Tri-County Athletic League dual meet against San Benito, and the Mustangs proceeded to treat the alumni to a glimpse of the now with a dominating 64-12 victory under the spotlight at GHS.

Every day, Robb Rodriguez knows at least one thing: After school, six hours of his day will be dedicated to wrestling.
