In the second game against Palma on the road, the Balers took advantage of the shorthanded Chieftains and won 50-48 in Salinas on Wednesday.

Two games into the Palma Luis A. Scattini Memorial Tournament, the San Benito boys basketball team has quickly validated its 9-1 start as no fluke.

As with every San Benito football season, the early goal is to make the finale with Palma mean something. That mission was accomplished this year.

After playing football, basketball and baseball during his freshman year at Palma High, Tanner Carrillo-Zazueta thought as long as he kept up with his grades, he was well on his way to the W.H. “Hank” Muller Outstanding Scholar Athlete Award, an award given to athletes who played sports and recieved good grades through four years of high school. 

Entering the Tri-County Athletic League championship at the Salinas Golf and Country Club, San Benito sophomore Ryan Han had one individual goal: Finish at least two shots better than Palma’s Jay Burlison.

Attempting to claim a second-straight Tri-County Athletic League title and a combined sweep of the league championships, the San Benito boys track and field team was stunned by upstart Palma during the TCAL championship at Gilroy High on Friday.

Committing four errors and allowing a five-run inning won’t win many baseball games. And Tuesday, with a chance to clinch their seventh-straight Tri-County Athletic League championship, the San Benito baseball team proved it.

Up 23-14 in the third game of the Balers volleyball match with Palma on Tuesday, San Benito looked like it was going to take control of the early-season contest.
