California Indian Market: The 29th annual California Indian Market in San Juan Bautista is set for May 4 and May 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days. The market, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and to honor troops and veterans, will take place at the San Juan School soccer lot at The Alameda and Highway 156. Featured themes include "Native American, Western, wildlife arts and crafts vendors, drums, dancers and food," according to a market announcement. 1. MACE Cinco de Mayo dinner: The Mexican-American Committee on Education (MACE) of San Benito County 42nd annual Cinco de Mayo Scholarship Banquet is May 5, at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The evening event will be emceed by Esmeralda Montenegro Owen, curator of marketing and community engagement for the National Steinbeck Center. The Banquet will include a program, dinner entertainment with Trio Borincano from San Jose, and dancing entertainment with Sonido con Sabor and deejay Sergio Flores. The event will pay tribute to the 2012 MACE Man and Woman of the year, Fernando Gonzalez, a former Hollister mayor and owner of True Value Hardware and Margie Barrios, San Benito County supervisor. Tickets are $50 per person; table reservations of eight people are encouraged and still available. No tickets will be sold at the door. The Spring Shop Hop is scheduled for Saturday. Three high school students who were ordered to remove American flag clothing to avoid offending students celebrating their Mexican heritage on Cinco de Mayo in 2010 filed an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit today, according to William J. Becker, with The Becker Law Firm. The students hope to reverse a trial judge’s ruling that their constitutional free speech and equal protection rights were not violated, he said.
