Hollister's police chief Wednesday expressed frustration after two arrests linked to accusations of sexual assault at a local daycare and urged residents to report crimes regardless of immigration status.

Hollister police arrested a couple running a daycare center on accusations linked to a sexual assault investigation, according to a Hollister Police Department report released Wednesday afternoon.

Hollister council members may be on the way to approving an ordinance that would ban smoking from licensed home daycares 24 hours a day – meaning there would be no fumes at the sites even after children go home.

Considering the known health impacts from tobacco residue, it might seem like an obvious decision to ban smoking 24 hours a day in licensed home daycare facilities. A disclosure requirement at the homes where someone smokes, however, accomplishes the same goal while allowing residents to maintain personal freedom in their homes.

The county health department has a slate of activities happening this week.

The Hollister woman who tried to slip a sleep-aid drug into children’s drinks at the Morgan Hill daycare facility where she worked pleaded no contest to attempted child endangerment at South County Courthouse on Thursday. 

A pre-school teacher from Hollister was charged Thursday on suspicion of 10 misdemeanors after a fellow teacher reported that she had dosed toddlers’ sippy cups with sleeping pills, authorities alleged.

A daycare employee from Hollister who attempted to drug several children under her care was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, police said. 

The Hollister City Council on Monday rejected a proposed ordinance from the San Benito County Public Health Department that would have banned smoking from licensed home daycares 24 hours a day.
