Local students and their science teachers gathered at the San Benito County River on Saturday to take part in the California Coastal Clean Up.

As we embark upon a new year, (one of the most critical decision-making years this state has faced, perhaps in decades), the California Department of Education this week released a new report, entitled “Greatness by Design: Supporting Outstanding Teaching to Sustain a Golden State.” The report was the product of a task force led by co-chairs Linda Darling Hammond, world-renown researcher from Stanford University, and Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent Chris Steinhauser. The task force included teachers, administrators, community members, and a variety of other education leaders. State Superintendent of Public instruction, Tom Torlakson, in announcing the report, stated, “This is the most comprehensive look our state has taken at California’s most important profession — teaching — in a generation.”

A pair of high-aspiring Gavilan College students – both military veterans who want to become doctors – will be recognized Tuesday during the 7 p.m. school board meeting at Gavilan, located at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy.

CRLA offers legal advice in Hollister on Thursdays

California Rural Legal Assistance has opened an office space in Hollister where they see clients one day a week for legal advice on issues ranging from fair housing, education and public benefits, among other topics. The office opened two months ago. The nonprofit agency, which has 18 offices in rural parts of California, has slowly been building a client base in San Benito County that has largely been through referrals from other nonprofit agencies.

HONORS: Christina Keohane: Christina Keohane, of Gilroy, earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Loyola Marymount University, joining more than 1,300 students in LMU's 2012 graduating class. Located between the Pacific Ocean and downtown Los Angeles, Loyola Marymount University is a comprehensive university offering 60 major programs, 38 master's degrees and a doctoral degree in education from four colleges, two schools and Loyola Law School.

$2.4 million Gavilan grant to aid Hispanic students

Gavilan just got a hefty chunk of federal funding that will help streamline the process of getting a four-year degree – particularly for Hispanic students – in nursing, computer science or digital media at California State University, Monterey Bay.
