District opts for smaller reserve

San Juan-Aromas Unified School District trustees voted 3-2 in favor of amending board policy to require the district to keep a 9 percent reserve, which easily meets the state-mandated minimum but is nearly half the size of the original rainy-day fund.

Prop. 2 has hidden surprise for local school districts

Proposition 2 asked California voters to pay down debts and establish a rainy-day fund for education at the state level. The approval of the proposition during the Nov. 4 election also establishes a new state law that shifts budget control in education from local districts to the state level.
