Alex Peña said he’d been living along the banks of the dried-out San Benito River bed for about two years. That was Monday as El Niño finally hit the Hollister area to start an expected onslaught of rain over the next two months.
With El Niño looming, the Hollister area is bracing for especially harsh rainstorm conditions overnight Monday and for several days ahead, according to the National Weather Service.
With a west-side homeless encampment along the riverbed, government officials and homeless advocates have started preparing for the possibility of an emergency removal of the resident if flooding occurs and expanded bed space at the homeless shelter.
