Santa Clara County is one of the nation’s most prosperous areas. Highly paid Silicon Valley workers have supported an economy featuring luxury cars, expensive homes and high-quality social amenities. Our South Valley area, however, is not so fortunate. Gilroy trails the rest of the county, having high rates of poverty, unemployment and schools struggling to meet the needs of their students.
OAKLAND, Calif. — San Francisco has stepped up its campaign to lure the Golden State Warriors, potentially complicating Oakland's effort to turn the Coliseum area into a sports and entertainment megaplex with new facilities for its three professional teams.
1. MACE Cinco de Mayo dinner: The Mexican-American Committee on Education (MACE) of San Benito County 42nd annual Cinco de Mayo Scholarship Banquet is May 5, at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The evening event will be emceed by Esmeralda Montenegro Owen, curator of marketing and community engagement for the National Steinbeck Center. The Banquet will include a program, dinner entertainment with Trio Borincano from San Jose, and dancing entertainment with Sonido con Sabor and deejay Sergio Flores. The event will pay tribute to the 2012 MACE Man and Woman of the year, Fernando Gonzalez, a former Hollister mayor and owner of True Value Hardware and Margie Barrios, San Benito County supervisor. Tickets are $50 per person; table reservations of eight people are encouraged and still available. No tickets will be sold at the door. The Downtown Hollister Farmers Market will open for the season on May 2, from 3 to 7 p.m., on Fifth Street. The market will be open Wednesdays through Sept. 26. Residents can again expect to find many vendors selling locally grown produce as well as a mix of other items.
