Gilroy Police officers arrested a 50-year-old former Hollister middle school teacher Monday on charges of allegedly having an ongoing relationship with a minor.
Hollister School District officials Friday closely followed news of the mass shooting at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School – with reports of 20 children and eight adults dead, including shooter Adam Lanza and his mother.
The Hollister School District had been billed $19,200 through October from its contracted legal firm that developed a report detailing “deficiencies” in a charter school petition, according to figures released to the Free Lance.
The fact that the Hollister School District paid a law firm specifically to find “deficiencies” in a charter school petition underscores the sharp lines drawn in a political battle against reform models and shows that local officials - despite glaring evidence it would likely spur academic success - are steadfast against changing a failed system.
Several Hollister gossip-based Facebook pages have cropped up, concerning parents enough to get in contact with police and attempt to have them removed.
After more than six months of negotiating, Hollister School District officials and the California School Employees Association chapter 625, which represents classified staff, came to an agreement on an employee contract that included concessions from both sides. The Hollister School Board ratified the contract at a special meeting Feb. 7.
As news came that the state Legislature had approved a bill that would restore funding to the home-to-school transportation budget while taking an equal cut from all schools statewide, Hollister School District Superintendent Gary McIntire said that the ruling would not change plans to eliminate bus service for the following school year.
The Hollister School District Board of Trustees will meet Jan. 24 to discuss steps to deal with a complete cut in state funding for school transportation, while the San Benito High School District plans to maintain its program in full.
