Anthem Blue Cross to cover SBC Medi-Cal patients

As San Benito County prepares to move Medi-Cal patients to a managed care program by Sept.1, the state Department of Health Care Services has contracted with a consultant to help with enrollment and education of patients.

Frozen berries linked to hepatitis outbreak

The California Department of Public Health issued a warning Monday not to eat Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend frozen berries as they may be linked to a multistate outbreak of hepatitis A infections. The frozen berries were sold at Costco, where they have been removed from stores though they may have been sold at other retail locations as well. Consumers with questions may call the California Department of Public Health at 916-650-6595.

Deadline to install CO monitors approaches

Property owners of apartments and other multi-family rental units have until Dec. 31 to install carbon monoxide alarms in ccunits to comply with a 2010 state law. The Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act required single-family homes with an attached garage or a fossil fuel source to install the alarms by July 1, 2011, but multi-unit property owners were given more time to come into compliance. Alarms are required in all units with attached garages or fossil fuel burning appliances.

Scratched eye isn’t healing

Q: We took Fiber, our terrier, to the vet for an injury to his eye. He scratched his cornea running after a ball in the bushes. The vet gave us some antibiotic ointment to put in his eye once or twice a day. But he’s not getting any better. The vet wants to see him again to do some tests and we’re not sure what to do. Should we take him to a specialist? Why isn’t the eye getting better?

Seniors can ask Medicare questions Tuesday

San Benito County senior citizens who have questions about Medicare will have a chance to ask them Nov. 27, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St., in Hollister. The forum is hosted by the Senior Network Services’ Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program.

CDC urges use of hygiene around pigs at county fairs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended people who are at high risk of serious flu complications to avoid visiting swine barns at fairs this year since they are seeing an increase in the number of cases of a new flu virus, H3N2v, this year. There have been no cases of this particular strain of the virus in California.
