After previously deciding on a Southside Road location, the county board is revisiting the chosen site for a future, permanent homeless shelter.

Mayor Ignacio Velazquez’s cheery, butter-yellow house sitting on the lawn by the Brigg’s Building looked too small to have much in it. But inside, a shower, a bedroom, a toilet and a bench filled a space smaller than most living rooms.

Alex Pena lives along the San Benito River bed with his “so-called other half,” as he put it. He and other homeless residents have pitched tents in a spot along the riverbed entering Hollister off San Juan Road that has become increasingly visible to traffic on the west-side gateway.
