Hollister council members Monday will consider whether to spend $15,000 on upgrades to the softball facilities at Veterans Memorial Park.

The San Benito Babe Ruth 15-and-under team saw its memorable season end on July 31 in the Pacific Southwest Regional tournament in Surprise, Ariz.

Miscues and errors ended the season for the 9-10 Little League Hollister American All-Stars in a 7-6 loss to Los Gatos on Thursday in the championship game of the Section 5 tournament in Gonzales.

July is - as usual - a down time for sports on the national and local scale. It’s more than a month away from the high school sports season and weeks after the end of the NBA and NHL season. It’s the dog days of the summer. It’s nothing new or old. It just is. But in this region, the month of July is certainly a point of pride. With the lack of sports going on and kids home for the summer, Little League, Babe Ruth and - in the case of Morgan Hill - Pony baseball has taken over. And with all of the success of those leagues in the three cities - specifically in Hollister - it’s easy to see why exactly that is.

The 2012 Hollister Little League All-Star teams were announced on the league’s website Friday. The league will be represented by eight teams in four age divisions.

For all the possessions that a man of 73-years-old owns, Joe Kenyon’s San Benito Haybalers baseball cap might get used the most.
