Candidates have submitted their required campaign finance documents for activity in recent months, while the county elections office made them available this week.
Supervisors this week voted 3-2 to recommend the county administrative officer begin the necessary steps to eliminate nearly 30 positions from the budget.
The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau endorsed two of the incumbent supervisors running in the June 5 election, including Margie Barrios and Anthony Botelho, while remaining neutral on the District 5 race between incumbent Jaime De La Cruz and opponent Sonny Flores
San Benito County supervisors on Tuesday approved moving ahead on the extension of a contract for fire protection with Calfire and directed staff to bring it back to the board for final action and discussion at a future date.
1. MACE Cinco de Mayo dinner: The Mexican-American Committee on Education (MACE) of San Benito County 42nd annual Cinco de Mayo Scholarship Banquet is May 5, at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The evening event will be emceed by Esmeralda Montenegro Owen, curator of marketing and community engagement for the National Steinbeck Center. The Banquet will include a program, dinner entertainment with Trio Borincano from San Jose, and dancing entertainment with Sonido con Sabor and deejay Sergio Flores. The event will pay tribute to the 2012 MACE Man and Woman of the year, Fernando Gonzalez, a former Hollister mayor and owner of True Value Hardware and Margie Barrios, San Benito County supervisor. Tickets are $50 per person; table reservations of eight people are encouraged and still available. No tickets will be sold at the door. Though the second installment of San Benito County property taxes was due April 10 – a week previous to the Board of Supervisors’ meeting this past Tuesday – Supervisor Jaime De La Cruz brought forward an agenda item to discuss the tax collector office hours of operation during tax season.
The San Benito County Board of Supervisors discussed the issue of illegal street vendors, a topic it tried to tackle with an educational approach last year.
