The petroleum industry provides tens of thousands of jobs and generates billions in state and local tax revenues. A CSU Fresno study projects future development of oil and gas reserves could create up to 195,000 new high paying jobs and generate as much as $22 billion in additional personal income.The same CSU Fresno study concluded that enhanced extraction of oil and gas in California would generate up to $6.7 billion in additional revenue for state and local governments. Bans on energy production and new taxes would jeopardize these needed new funds.
Deep Divide: Measure J opponents tout potential oil boom
Before the county board OK'd placing Measure J on the ballot, supervisors had the option of delaying the process to conduct an economic analysis but chose to bypass that choice and send the proposal to voters. Without a county economic report to precede the November ballot decision – whether to ban hydraulic fracturing, cyclic steaming and acidizing as extraction techniques along with all petroleum activities in rural residential zones near the two cities – the local farm bureau went ahead and conducted a study of its own.
