The San Benito girls water polo team clinched fifth place inside the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division on Thursday with a 13-8 victory over Salinas.

Playing in the Tri-County Athletic League B Division a year ago, the San Benito boys water polo team believed they were undervalued and undeservedly placed in a lower-tier league. After finishing with a 12-2 record inside the TCAL, and clinching the league championship with a goal in the closing seconds over Palma, the Balers won’t be underappreciated in 2012 when their season starts on Aug. 30 at Soquel.
Despite competing in 10 combined events in the boys and girls Central Coast Section swimming championship on Friday and Saturday, the Balers advanced only a diver to the finals after struggling in the prelims.
San Benito lost its first game of the year Saturday. After opening the game with one run in the top of the first inning, the Balers lost to Valley Christian 7-1.
