Jason Goelz is clearly excited about his recent $2.5-million purchase of a 378-acre, largely unspoiled former ranch site in the pristine hills of west Gilroy, a vast expanse of undulating hillsides nestled in the valley wall he plans to soon set on track to become one of the region’s premiere event, recreation and winery venues.
With a tasting room and 50-acre estate vineyard nestled in the foothills of San Benito County and a majestic special events mansion just north of Morgan Hill, Frank Léal recently completed his entrepreneurial trifecta with the opening of a contemporary farm-to-table eatery featuring wood-fired pizza, wine tasting, bocce ball and a gourmet bakery, to name a few selling points.

Bone Off rib cook off: The fourth annual Bone Off rib cook off will be June 1 at the San Benito County Historical Park, in Tres Pinos. The amateur barbecue contest starts at 9 a.m., with judging at 3 p.m. for the 35 contestants. Admission is free. The event will include live music and games for the kids. Limelight Theater will open their production of the murder mystery comedy “Murder Most Fowl” at Paine's Restaurant, where guests will enjoy the dinner theater show starting Friday. The show will be performed March 8-10 and 15-17.
