The San Benito County supervisors agreed to delay the layoffs for public safety employees at the June 19 meeting, where they agreed to make the layoffs effective on Aug. 15 instead of July 1.
Supervisors this week voted 3-2 to recommend the county administrative officer begin the necessary steps to eliminate nearly 30 positions from the budget.
The only clarity out of the recent debate on San Benito County's contracted fire service is that officials involved with the decision did a poor job of explaining the proposed arrangements from Calfire and Hollister.
City Councilman Doug Emerson contends that the brother of Supervisor Robert Rivas threatened to have his sibling reverse a vote for a $3.4 million fire contract if the Hollister official did not prompt a cancellation to San Juan Bautista’s recent town hall meeting over the proposed merger.
Though the second installment of San Benito County property taxes was due April 10 – a week previous to the Board of Supervisors’ meeting this past Tuesday – Supervisor Jaime De La Cruz brought forward an agenda item to discuss the tax collector office hours of operation during tax season.
