For a while, it looked as though San Benito County would take yet another painful blow to the chin from the state. Fortunately, and with a persistent, laudable push from local delegates, area residents will see a return on their tax investment in California and lose a significant financial liability.
While the Hollister Police Department officers have plans for a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location in within the Hollister city limits on Sept. 1, between 7 p.m. and 2:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol in San Benito County and Gilroy will also be out at maximum enforcement for the three-day weekend.
California Rural Legal Assistance has opened an office space in Hollister where they see clients one day a week for legal advice on issues ranging from fair housing, education and public benefits, among other topics. The office opened two months ago. The nonprofit agency, which has 18 offices in rural parts of California, has slowly been building a client base in San Benito County that has largely been through referrals from other nonprofit agencies.
For the sixth-consecutive year, professional bull riders will make their way to San Benito County on Sept. 8, but this year’s Hollister bull ridding festivities will be slightly different.
Knowing health care district board member Ernest Rivas refused to step down and do the right thing immediately following his 2010 battery conviction and sex offender registration, it comes as no surprise he has declared candidacy for reelection and chosen to further embarrass himself.

San Benito County supervisors approved two contracts last Tuesday with agencies that will guide the community through the first phase of creating a special district to support parks, recreation and library services.

Baler Summer Nights: The Baler Backers Athletic Organization is holding its annual dinner/dance and auction fundraiser in support of San Benito High School’s Haybaler Athletic Program, Aug. 18, at the San Benito County Fairgrounds/Bolado Park, from 6 p.m. to midnight, with the dinner served between 7 and 8 p.m. Entertainment is being provided by local band favorite Soul Kiss. Tickets for the 21+ event are $50 each and table reservations of eight are also being accepted. There will be a Live & Silent Auction to raise funds for Baler Athletics, which has seen a severe reduction in its funding due to state budget cuts which have affected California’s school system.
