If the San Benito High boys’ basketball team ends up winning its first-ever Central Coast Section championship, it will have earned it — the hard way.

The shot clock was turned off, and San Benito High sophomore forward Shraee Harrison had received the green light from coach David Kaplansky to take the final shot of the first half in the team’s Jan. 15 game against Christopher.

Just seconds after the opening tip in Thursday night’s non-league home game against Watsonville, San Benito High senior guard-forward Hyram Miskin whipped a pass from the top of the key to Robbie Skinner, who was streaking to the basket and scored on a layup.

With no star-studded post players on this year’s roster, the San Benito High boys’ basketball team has had to reinvent itself this season.

Despite losing four of five starters from a team that went 21-4 and won the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division championship last year, San Benito boys’ basketball coach David Kaplansky said there’s no reason to shy away from the lofty goal of repeating as league champs.

After spending the past year practicing out of the Maze Middle School gym, the Hollister Warriors youth wrestling program - and its 35 wrestlers - will open a permanent home later this month - possibly alongside the San Benito High wrestling program.

Spurred by a 10-0 run to start the third quarter, the San Benito girls basketball team beat Fremont Thursday night and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Championships.

The girls basketball team opened the Del Mar Tournament in San Jose with a 47-37 loss to San Jose’s Leigh.
