Top 5: Pinnacles speaker series, mediation and more

1.) Pinnacles September speaker series: Join Park Ranger Jennifer, of Pinnacles National Monument, as she explores the many challenges that snakes face in their bid for survival. In this 30-60 minute fun-filled discussion, visitors will learn about some of these amazing adaptations and how they make life without limbs possible. Kids’ activities include handling snake skins and junior ranger booklets. The lecture will be Saturday, at 2 p.m., at the Soledad Library, 401 Gabilan Drive, in Soledad. Details: 389-4486 ext. 267.

Teacher turnover spikes again at SBHS

Although San Benito High School Superintendent Stan Rose is looking at the bright side of the start to classes Monday, the teachers union president expressed disappointment in the turnover rate among educators and blamed it on the district’s issuance of 16 pink slips in the spring.

Top 5: Baler Summer Nights, Garden Railroad Tour and more

1.) Baler Summer Nights: The Baler Backers Athletic Organization is holding its annual dinner/dance and auction fundraiser in support of San Benito High School’s Haybaler Athletic Program, Aug. 18, at the San Benito County Fairgrounds/Bolado Park, from 6 p.m. to midnight, with the dinner served between 7 and 8 p.m. Entertainment is being provided by local band favorite Soul Kiss. Tickets for the 21+ event are $50 each and table reservations of eight are also being accepted. There will be a Live & Silent Auction to raise funds for Baler Athletics, which has seen a severe reduction in its funding due to state budget cuts which have affected California’s school system. Police agencies to do extra patrols near schools

The California Highway Patrol, San Benito County Sheriff’s Office and The Hollister Police Department will be conducting extra patrol around the schools as they open for the 2012-2013 school year, according to an announcement.

Residents want new parkway corridor to cover many uses

A river parkway reaching from San Juan Bautista to the San Benito County Historical Park in Tres Pinos is in the early planning stages, and residents Wednesday had a chance to give some input on where they want the trails to go along the corridor.

Relay in Hollister paces for another six figures

At least 50 teams of local residents showed up Aug. 4 to spend 24 hours at Andy Hardin Stadium at San Benito High School for the annual Hollister Relay For Life.
