California Indian Market: The 29th annual California Indian Market in San Juan Bautista is set for May 4 and May 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days. The market, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and to honor troops and veterans, will take place at the San Juan School soccer lot at The Alameda and Highway 156. Featured themes include "Native American, Western, wildlife arts and crafts vendors, drums, dancers and food," according to a market announcement. Dual Immersion Parent Workshop

San Juan School hosts Dual Immersion Parent Workshop

San Juan School will be having a Parent Workshop for their Dual Language Immersion Program Jan. 9, in the school’s cafeteria from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This workshop is for families currently enrolled in the K-5th grade program and for interested preschool and kindergarten families. Leading the workshop will be one of California’s leading experts on dual language education, Rosa Molina from the Association of Two-Way & Dual Language Education. Topics include the benefits of being fluent in two or more languages starting in kindergarten and what expectations parents should have for their children acquiring a second language. Students’ families hone Spanish skills in summer program

On Fridays this summer, a group of families have been gathering at the San Benito County Free Library and other locations in Hollister or San Juan so that children enrolled at the Hollister Dual Language Academy or the San Juan School dual immersion program have a chance to practice their Spanish skills while school is not in session.

Briefs: Shop Hop event is set for Saturday

The Spring Shop Hop is scheduled for Saturday. For the inaugural Shop Hop event before the holidays, more than 60 local businesses participated and they raffled off 11 baskets full of local products or gift certificates. There were 722 entries from shoppers on the day of the event. The spring event will be more of the same, and many businesses have signed up. Residents can shop and win free delicious wines, gourmet chocolates, gift certificates to spa treatments, new fashions, yummy restaurants, computer tune ups and more! The more shops you hop, the more chances you get to win one of 15 amazing raffle baskets with prizes contributed by these generous local organizations.
