Less than a week after avoiding a defeat to Gilroy for the first time in four years, the boys soccer team used that momentum to shut out Palma 2-0.

Rivalries usually consist of teams trading wins game in and game out. But in boys soccer, the Gilroy and San Benito rivalry has been mostly one sided - tilting toward the Mustangs.

Cynthia Sanchez scored 21 seconds into the match. Maggie Trigo tallied two minutes before the end of regulation. In between, the Gilroy High girls soccer team survived a handful of San Benito chances to claim a 2-0 victory in Tri-County Athletic League action Wednesday night in Gilroy.

Coming off a spirited 2-1 win over North Salinas a few days earlier, head coach Tony Deras expected more of the same for the boys soccer team against league-rival Salinas on Thursday. Instead, though, Deras got a team not willing to try, he said.
