The Mexican American Committee on Education of San Benito County presents the popular and renowned Chicano, all-time, five-time Grammy award winner Little Joe & La Familia celebrating Cultura in San Benito County. It is set for 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 12 at Bolado Park, 9000 Airline Highway in Tres Pinos.
At National Night Out Tuesday evening two local residents were honored as peace advocates in San Benito County. Assemblyman Luis Alejo selected Dolores Villalon and Robert Scattini to receive the 2013 California Peace Award along with three other residents or groups from his assembly district.
The Community Foundation for San Benito County launched a new endowment that is focused on serving the local Latino community on July 30. The Latino Generations Endowment is the focus of the Latino Advisory Committee, a charter of the Community Foundation.
The Youth Alliance will be honoring two community heroes at its “White Nights – a benefit for peace” fundraiser on May 18, at San Juan Oaks Golf Club, 3825 Union Road, in Hollister
The Youth Alliance will be participating in La Posada at the Rancho Park Neighborhood Center, 1200 Rancho Drive, on Wednesday, at 3:30 p.m. The Mexican Christmas tradition celebrates the nine days of La Posada (or the Lodging) from Dec. 16 through Christmas Eve. On each night, a home is selected, where the doors open to all with an invitation for refreshments, caroling and dancing.
While city officials received a courtesy call last week that their application for a community development block grant had been denied, they were still awaiting more information this week on the rating of their application to see if there is any room for improvement during next year's application cycle.
1.) Movies Under the Stars - Kung Fu Panda 2: The Hollister Downtown Association and the Youth Alliance are sponsoring “Movies Under the Stars,” for one week in July. The featured movie will be “Kung Fu Panda 2,” and it will air July 19, at the grassy lot on the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Admission is free and the movie starts a half hour after dusk. All minors should be accompanied by an adult. Brenda Weatherly, the president of the HDA, said the nonprofit had struggled to find enough sponsors to have the outdoor movies run for four Thursdays in July, but that they would offer at least one outdoor movie this summer. Sponsors of the program include the San Benito Health Foundation, Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, Recology, Charles River and the HDA.
