Hollister police called in the Monterey County Bomb Squad early this morning after finding a suspicious, fused device at the intersection of Valley View Road and Fairhaven Drive.

The bomb squad responded and placed the device in a containment vessel and transported it to a rural location for detonation, according to a press release from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities described it as having a fuse on top of a cylindrical, closed tube made of brownish wrapping, either paper or cardboard, according to the release. The fuse had been burned down all the way to the top of the closed tube that was about a half-inch in diameter.

Officers believed it may have been a stick of dynamite but could not confirm whether it was dynamite or a large firecracker, according to the office.

The statement notes that it is protocol to leave nothing behind for further examination.
