Motorists who use Fallon Road will have to find another way to and from work for the rest of the year as construction crews close part of the road to replace a bridge.
Starting today at about 10 a.m., workers from Granite Construction will shut down a section of Fallon Road between Shelton Drive and Scagliotti Road east of the Hollister Airport.
Public works officials said they are trying to notify all residents and businesses in the area about the road closure.
“We’re going to everyone on Fallon Road and giving them a notice explaining about the closure,” Assistant Public Works Director Arman Nazemi said.
The $429,294 contract with Granite to build the new bridge at Santa Ana Creek was approved by the San Benito County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 12.
However, the state Department of Fish and Game requires any construction work for the bridge that has to be done in the creek bed must be completed by Oct. 15.
“We’re trying to have all of the major work, including the concrete pouring, done by then,” Nazemi said.
Fish and Game set the Oct. 15 deadline because that is typically the beginning of the rainy season.
“If it doesn’t rain by Oct. 15, we could get an extension one week at a time,” Nazemi said.
If construction crews cannot complete their work in and along the river banks by Oct. 15 and the winter rains come, then the project could be shut down until April 15 when the rainy season normally ends.
The project will be paid for entirely by federal highway and transportation funds.
The project would replace the existing 24-foot wide bridge with a 40-foot wide structure. The new structure will have two 12-foot wide lanes with room for an 8-foot wide shoulder on each side.
