in Rancho Cordova with a 3-1 record last weekend.

Following its second-place finish at the Soccer by the Bay tournament in Foster City, the Hollister Earthquakes, a Class I U10 soccer team, took runner-up at the Casa Boca Adidas Champions Cup in Rancho Cordova with a 3-1 record last weekend.
Hollister opened the tournament with three straight victories, including a 2-0 win over host Casa Boca, a 5-1 triumph against El Dorado Top Gun and a 4-0 shutout of San Juan Lightning Blue in the semifinal round, a ‘B’ team based out of Sacramento.
In the championship final, however, up against San Juan’s ‘A’ team, the Earthquakes lost 8-1 to finish in second place.
Manuel Ceja, Mikey Miguel, Elias Reckas, Luis Ayala, Alexander Ramos and Alonzo Murga all pocketed goals for Hollister, which will travel to Los Altos for its upcoming season opener against the MVLA Jaguars 99 Black.
Just last week, Hollister nabbed a second-place finish in Foster City, with victories against the Peninsula Galaxy (3-1) and the San Mateo Nighthawks (12-0). The Earthquakes tied the Burlingame Gold 2-2 in its third game before narrowly falling in the championship to the Juventus Blackhawks Gold, 4-3.
Youth basketball league sign-ups
Boys and girls from third- through eighth-grade are invited to register for the 2009-2010 season of Hollister National Junior Basketball (NJB) on Sept. 14 or 28. This will be Hollister NJB’s ninth season of competition.
Hollister teams play a majority of their games at San Benito High School and occasionally travel to south San Jose for Sunday games during the regular season. Mandatory play rules are enforced, so all players play at least half of every game.
The $250 registration fee includes a uniform, picture package, a minimum of 10 games and two hours of practice per week.
Teams are grouped by gender and grade level (third/fourth grade; fifth/sixth grade; and seventh/eighth grade) and everyone who signs up will be placed on a team.
Registration will be held Monday, Sept. 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Fire Station #2 at the corner of Union Road and Airline Highway and Monday, Sept. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bertha Briggs House, 1221 Memorial Drive near the skateboard facility at Veterans Memorial Park.

Llamas makes ODP District II squad
Hollister soccer standout Paulina Llamas qualified to the Olympic Development Program’s District II 1997 team last week, and will now tryout for the exclusive state team, which is expected to be decided later this year.
Llamas is one of three Hollister residents to recently qualify to the ODP’s District II level. She joins 13-year-olds Hannah Press and Jahkya Turiello, who made the D-II cut earlier this month.
Professional Bull Riders coming to Hollister Sept. 5
The third annual Hollister Professional Bull Riders Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour is bucking into Bolado Park on Sept. 5 for an evening filled with rank bulls, high scores. and big wrecks.
The event will begin at 6 p.m.
In addition to the main event, there will be mutton busting at 1 p.m. for children 7 years and younger. Live music, vendor booths, a kiddie corral and a barbecue where the fans can come and meet the riders and receive autographs will begin at 2 p.m., while the Tres Pinos School Parents Club will host a wine tasting event and silent auction at 3 p.m.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the enrichment program at Tres Pinos School, while funds raised from the barbecue and concessions will benefit local 4-H and FFA groups.
The Hollister PBR Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour will showcase some of the most promising rising stars on the circuit, as well as fan favorites and veterans, including J.B. Mauney, Zack Brown, Kasey Hayes, Pistol Robinson, Luke Snyder and Reese Cates, among others.
All the competitors will face-off against the most famous animal athletes in the business. In attendance will be All In (owned by Alex Naccarato and Chad Berger), Big Tex (Chad Berger) and Carillo Cartel (Gilbert Carillo), just to name a few.

YMCA announces sign-ups for new sports
The YMCA of San Benito County recently announced sign-ups for three sports, including soccer and co-ed soccer, as well as the YMCA’s Sharks and Parks Youth Hockey League program.
The youth hockey league is for boys and girls in grades first through eighth – there will be three divisions – and is tentatively slated to begin Sept. 19 at the basketball courts at Veterans Memorial Park. Cost is $80, or $75 if registered before Sept. 5.
The YMCA soccer program will be for boys and girls ages two and a half to five years old. Two session dates are scheduled, with the first session slated from Sept. 12-Oct. 17, and the second session scheduled from Oct. 24-Dec.12. The soccer program will be held on Saturday mornings. Cost is $45 per session.
The YMCA will also have a co-ed soccer program for grades kindergarten through fifth, with a tentative start date scheduled for Sept. 12. Cost is $80, or $75 if registered before Sept. 5.
The YMCA’s programs are to encourage a love for the game and companionship between players through the teaching of skills, development of positive attitudes about fair play, teamwork and reinforcement of the YMCA core values through caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

San Juan Oaks hosting summer golf clinics
The San Juan Oaks Golf Club has two remaining golf clinics for the summer, where golfers can fine-tune specific areas of their game to help improve scores.
One clinic will be offered each month, with remaining clinics focused on putting (Sept. 26) and pitch shots (Oct. 17).
Classes will be held on Saturdays from 12 to 1 p.m. Cost is $25 per person.
