Gavilan College Trustee Laura Perry will be honored for providing over 20 years of service as a trustee of California’s community colleges. She will be recognized at the 2013 Annual Trustees Conference in May 2013. Laura Perry was first elected to the Gavilan College Board of Trustees in 1992 from the community of Morgan Hill, and is now Gavilan’s longest-serving trustee. Perry is an attorney, and an alumna of Gavilan College.
Get rid of bulky items
HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Integrated Waste Management Regional Agency will accept two bulky items per household free of charge on select dates this year. Suggested items for disposal include furniture, appliances, tires or other items. To participate, residents must bring a driver license or ID that identifies them as a resident of San Benito County or its incorporated cities. The bulky item collections dates for 2013 are March 23 and 24, June 29 and 30, Sept. 28 and 29, and Dec. 28 and 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at John Smith Landfill, 2650 John Smith Road. Women’s Club starts flamingo fundraiser
HOLLISTER – The Women’s Club of Hollister will be surprising local residents with their second annual Pink Flamingo Flocking Project April 1-15. The block of birds will arrive in front yards starting on April 1, with residents to make a donation to the Women’s Club in exchange for having the plastic birds removed and sent on to another yard. HOLLISTER – The San Benito district Cub and Boy Scouts will host a recruiting day April 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Sunnyslope Medical Center, at the corner of Sunnyslope and Memorial Drive. Cub Scouts troops are open to boys in first through fifth grade while Boy Scouts is open to boys 11 to 18 years old. Walk ‘n Roll fun day
HOLLISTER – Local residents are invited to Walk ‘N Roll on April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Veterans Memorial Building in the courtyard. Young Eagles rally

Veterans appreciation dinner
The American Legion Post 69 presents All War Veterans’ Appreciation Dinner on March 23 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St. The no-host bar is set for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The special presentation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the dinner served from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will include tri-tip and a quarter chicken with all the trimmings, along with a soft drink coffee and dessert. Historical society public safety memorabilia
HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Historical Society will host a presentation by Joseph Alvarado on collecting public safety memorabilia, March 27, at 7 p.m., at the San Benito County Historical Museum, 498 Fifth St., in Hollister. Annual Easter egg hunt
HOLLISTER – The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary Post 9242 will host their annual Easter egg hunt at Veterans Memorial Park March 30, at 1 p.m. There will be three hunting areas for children of different ages, including 2-4, 5-7 and 8-10. For children that do not find any eggs, there will be some available at the command post. No parents will be allowed in the hunting areas and the hunt will start exactly at 1 p.m.
Walk a mile in her shoes
HOLLISTER – Emmaus House and Community Solutions are teaming up for a “march to end gender and teen dating violence, sexual assault, and promote positive, healthier gender relations.” Men are invited to participate for $30, with a pair of women’s heels included in the entry fee, with women invited to participate for $20. The walk is April 6, at 11 a.m., at Fourth and San Benito streets, with a one-mile course marked out. The first person to cross the finish line in heels, the first team to cross the finish line in heels, the top individual fundraiser, top team fundraiser and the largest team will all get prices. Humanitarian law course
HOLLISTER – The American Red Cross Monterey Bay Area Chapter is offering an International Humanitarian Law course to residents of Monterey and San Benito counties March 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, McGowan Building, Room MG99, 411 Pacific St. The class is about the rules of engagement in armed conflict (the Geneva Conventions).  The American Red Cross played a critical role in the development of International Humanitarian Law and continues to play a leading role in educating the public about its importance. The course includes information about American Red Cross international relief efforts in areas of armed conflict as well as the reunification of families who are victims of conflict.  A major segment of the course will explore how International Humanitarian Law can help protect people who are the most vulnerable in times of war and armed conflict.
Caregiver University
HOLLISTER – A free Caregiver University will be hosted March 23, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St., for residents caring for a loved one with memory loss or dementia. The day will include workshops on: challenging behaviors, communication, anger and paranoia; personal care issues and wandering; and healthy body, healthy brain. AARP tax aide offered through April 10
HOLLISTER – The AARP Tax-Aide program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation assistance to taxpayers of low-to-middle income, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Volunteers will be available to assist residents on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., thru April 10, at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. Please call ahead to make an appointment. Participants should bring their photo identification and Social Security cards or ITIN documents for each individual on their return, along with any tax documents they have received in the mail, last year’s return, and all relevant information on income and expenses.
