A Paicines bronc rider was injured at about 3 p.m. Sunday and airlifted from Bolado Park after a horse fell on him during a showcase ride at the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo.

The accident happened during a special showcase event. Bronc rider John Flook was performing an alternative type of bronc riding – it was not part of any competitions – when it occurred. When Flook and the horse came out of the chute, the bronc kicked hard and fell back on top of him.

He appeared unconscious at the outset, but then awakened and wiggled his toes, as broadcast by the rodeo announcer.

Responders treated him in an ambulance before the helicopter arrived. Rodeo workers prepared the south end of the arena for the landing by marking a large “X” in the dirt.

The helicopter departed at 3:36 p.m., while Flook’s status is unclear.
