We would like to congratulate Tony Bruscia on officially
becoming the mayor of Hollister after a unanimous vote of approval
during Monday’s City Council meeting.
Bruscia has been an excellent City Council member while
representing District 5 and has done a good job of filling the role
of vice mayor, as well as being president of the League of
California Cities’ Monterey Bay division.
We would like to congratulate Tony Bruscia on officially becoming the mayor of Hollister after a unanimous vote of approval during Monday’s City Council meeting.
Bruscia has been an excellent City Council member while representing District 5 and has done a good job of filling the role of vice mayor, as well as being president of the League of California Cities’ Monterey Bay division.
Bruscia, 35, also decided against running for a county supervisor seat in the upcoming March 2004 election and turned down a possible bid for state assemblyman against Simon Salinas.
We’re glad Bruscia will concentrate his efforts and expertise as a City Council member and mayor.
Despite the non-elected status of mayor here, it is obviously an important role. Representing our growing city as its top official, along with City Manager Dale Shaddox, is an arduous task as well as an enjoyable one.
While previous mayor Brian Conroy helped make some significant advances for Hollister, his dismal attendance record compared to other Council members hurt his performance and credibility in the top spot.
Being an elected official at this level usually has its high time commitments for low pay, but everyone throwing their hat into the ring should know this from the outset.
We liked Bruscia’s upbeat comments from his inaugural meeting as mayor, despite the higher-than-usual controversy level at that particular gathering. We also appreciate his excellent open lines of communication with the Free Lance.
It is important for the mayor of Hollister and especially for its residents – whether in agreement with our stances or not – to share his opinion and thoughts with the daily hometown newspaper and Web site on the many key issues we face.
Bruscia is right. There is much good happening in our city, along with the challenges.
At the City Council meeting, he mentioned the renovated Veterans Building, downtown street beautification, street repairs and construction of Fire Station 2 as a few examples.
We expect Tony Bruscia will use his political talent, popularity and dedication to keep the City of Hollister on the path that makes this such a fine place to live, work and visit.
