BUDDY POPPYS: The Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 9242 Ladies will distribute Buddy Poppys on Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22 at the Post Office and Nob Hill Foods stores. Wake-Up San Benito County Breakfast: Join guest speaker Linda Daughenbaugh of Fast Travel at 7:30 a.m. May 25 in Paine’s Restaurant, 421 East St., for breakfast. ANIMALS IN NEED: The Hollister Animal Shelter is looking for a few good volunteers. Is there any reason you couldn’t donate about two hours a week to help walk dogs or cuddle cats. POWDER PUFF COMPETITION: Students at San Benito High School will hold their seasonal Powder Puff Competition beginning at 5:30 p.m. May 21 at Andy Hardin Field. The four classes of students will compete head-to-head and a dance will follow at 8 p.m. in Mattson Gym. Child Care provider recognition: Child care providers are being honored at a special dinner event on Thursday, May 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at San Juan Oaks Golf Club, Highway 156 at Union Road. Registration is from 6 to 6:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Bill Michaelis, professor at San Francisco State University and director of Children Together, an international leadership training organization. Admission is free for licensed child care providers and $10 for guests.

STATE ART FAIR: The California Exposition & State Fair is now accepting entries for California Fine Art, one of the largest and oldest art competitions in the state. Annual Festival: The Portuguese Society of the Holy Ghost of Hollsiter will have its annual festival weekend May 29 and 30.
