Republican Meeting

Book Sale

The Friends of the San Benito County Library will hold a book sale from 9am to 2pm Sat. Aug. 28 behind the SBC Free Library at 470 Fifth and Monterey sts. Find new and used books for school, health, fiction, science, history, Spanish and more, plus videos and CDs. If you have items to donate, bring them to the library donation bin.

Kinship Food and Wine Tasting

The 48th annual Food and Wine Tasting fund-raiser for the Gabilan chapter of Kinship, an organization dedicated to providing support and services for foster children and their families, will be held from 4 to 6:30pm Sept. 11 at Paicines Ranch at 13388 Airline Highway approx. 1 mile past the village of Paicines on Hwy. 25). Customer Service Workshop

Learn why customer service skills are so important during a small business workshop presented by Gavilan College. The two-hour course will be held from 10am to noon on Wed. Apples Ready

The agricultural Commissioner of San Benito County has announced Red Delicious apples are released for harvesting. Tests indicate the apples have reached the minimum maturity standards necessary for shipping. Individual growers are reminded that they will have to decide the optimum time for harvesting based on color, size and other considerations.

Support the Troops

Come lend your support for local troops in Iraq. Tuesday, Aug. 31, Operation Homecoming will be holding a donation drive in front of Nob Hill Foods on Airline Hwy. Soldiers from the central coast will be collecting donations from 8am to 3pm, and then again from 5pm to 8pm. Some items needed are allergy medicine, anti-bacterial wipes, granola bars, hard candy, batteries, prepaid phone cards and more.

Help Companion Animals in Need

The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) will help Petco celebrate their new National Pet Adoption Days by hosting a petfair to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals currently at the Shelter and in foster homes. Please come to the FOSMAS petfair on Sat-Sun, 28-29 Aug, noon – 5:00 PM, at Petco, Morgan Hill (corner of Tennant and Monterey). Stop by to find a new furry friend; make a donation to help cover spay/neuter, food, and litter expenses; or sign-up to volunteer for the Shelter.

Preschool Registration

The First Five Preschool is accepting applications for the fall session. Children in the R.O. Hardin and Calaveras attendance areas who turn 4 years old by Dec. 2, 2004 are eligible. There are am and pm sessions available. Classes last three hours a day Monday to Thursday with Friday off. There is no fee but parents must provide transportation.

The San Benito County

American Red Cross will be offering a free disaster class for the public from 6 to 10pm on Sept. 7 and 8. The training will teach participants how to

provide emergency disaster assistance to others. The course is free but pre-registration is required.

Labor Day Concert

The Naval Postgraduate School invites members of the public to the annual Labor Day Concert on the Lawn featuring the Monterey Bay Symphony at 2pm on Sept. 6. Admission is free, but parking and seating is limited.

Caregiver Training

A Caregiver Training Workshop is being offered for family members and paraprofessionals interested in learning skills

associated with caring for a dependent elder. The workshop is Friday, Sept. 10 at 9:30am to 1:30pm at the Oldemeyer Multi-use Center, 986 Hilby Avenue in Seaside. Please bring your own bag lunch. Pre-registration is required as class size is limited. There is a $25 materials fee. All registered participants will receive a Caregiver Training workbook and completion

certificate.

Horse Show

The Western Schooling Horse Show will be held at Rascal Slough Ranch in Hilmar with sign-up beginning at 8am on Sept. 26. There will be high point awards, first place prizes for halter, leadline, trail, pleasure and equitation classes for every age group, followed by a fun class.

San Juan Soccer Club

The San Juan Soccer Club will kick off the soccer season with a fun day of events Sat. Aug. 28 from 10am to 1pm at San Juan School. Bring your outgrown cleats and shinguards to trade or giveaway. Hot dogs for $1 and $2 hamburgers will be available. The club is also looking for volunteers.

Street Closures

The City of Hollister will be closing the following streets for pavement rehabilitation on Thursday, September 2nd, 2004: Fifth Street (Monterey Street to San Benito Street), Fifth Street ( San Benito Street to East Street), Sixth Street (Monterey Street to San Benito Street), and Seventh Street (San Benito Street to Sally Street). All businesses will remain open. Please park on adjacent streets and use the sidewalk to access the businesses.
