ABC’S OF BECOMING A FIREFIGHTER: The Gilroy Fire Department and Santa Clara County Black Firefighters Association are sponsoring a special class for people seeking a career in the fire service at a major or small department on Saturday, May 1. Class topics include a special guest from the City of Gilroy, pre-written exam, physical exam, oral exam, post-oral exam and review of resumes.
Check-in is from 8 to 9 a.m. with class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wheeler Auditorium, 250 W. Sixth St., Gilroy. There is no charge to attend the class. However, donations in the amount of $10 are sought to support the SCCBFA mini fire engine project.

KICK THE HABIT: Learn a step-by-step approach to quit smoking and how to maintain a smoke-free life at the YMCA, 339 Fifth st., Hollister, March 30 to May 11. COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE NETWORK: The Community Assistance Network will host a second strategic planning session on Tuesday, March 30 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial Building, 6401 San Benito St., Hollister. The purpose of the session is to bring together local youth service providers as a first step toward coordinating the county’s services for youth. prunedale road: As part of the Highway 101/156 interchange project, Prunedale North Road will be closed until Friday, March 26 at 6 p.m., weather permitting. Motorists wanting to access Vierra Canyon Road via southbound 101 will be detoured to Boronda Road in Salinas. Prunedale North Road will still be accessible from the San Miguel interchange. Bay Meadows Bus Trip: A bus trip to Bay Meadows will be held April 14 at $60 per person. A reading will be offered pertaining to the history of Jesse Ross and Warren Bowden, two early pioneers in San Benito County. Refreshments will be served and the event is free to the public.

SYMPHONY: The South Valley Symphony will have their next concert Saturday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church at 8455 Wren Ave. in Gilroy. The concert has been designated as a “Celebration of Soloists,” and the orchestra will be under the direction of Henry Mollicone.
