Heritage event in SJB
On Saturday, join an informative walking tour of the heritage roses (some of which date back to Civil War days) at the San Juan Bautista District Cemetery, 70 Monterey St. The tour will be led by Jill Perry, curator of the collection at the Heritage Rose Garden in San Jose; joining her will be Jeri Jennings, national convener for the Heritage Roses Group. After touring the roses and collecting some cuttings, the group will then proceed to the lovely garden of the historic Marentis House, 45 Monterey St. for a propagation workshop. Bring a hat, water, pencil and paper and maybe clippers and gloves. Limelight presents ‘Aladdin’ at Spring Grove
Spring Grove School’s Theater Arts program is putting on a production of Disney’s Aladdin through Limelight Productions. It is set for 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at the school. The price is $10 per adult, $5 per student and free for children under age 5.
Arts Council presents ‘Taiko & Dimensions’
The San Benito County Arts Council is pleased to present San Jose Taiko & Dimensions Dance Theater on May 30 at the San Benito High School Auditorium for a dynamic evening of music, dance, drumming, theater and culture for the entire family. According to the arts council: Dimensions Dance Theater, based out of Oakland, has advanced African-American inspired dance through their presentation of both traditional and contemporary dance, including African, Jazz, Modern and Hip Hop. This performance is sponsored by the San Benito County Arts Council with support from Corbin, Heritage Bank of Commerce, the California Arts Council, Community Foundation for San Benito County and Monterey Peninsula Foundation. All proceeds benefit the SBC Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools Program, which serves over 6,000 local students annually with quality art programs and services.

Casino trip fundraiser
The Hollister Senior Center is having a fundraiser trip to Cukchansi and Tachi Palace Indian casinos on May 24. Departure is 6:30 a.m. from the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. The price is $30 per person. Each person gets $15 in free play and a $5 food voucher at Tachi Palace with $10 in free play and a $5 food voucher at Chukhansi. It is open to anyone 21 and older. Advance registration required. Sounds and Flavors of Eastern Europe
The event featuring “The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble is set for 5 p.m. May 26 at the Hollister United Methodist Church, at Monterey and Fifth streets in Hollister. Portuguese Celebration
Come join the annual Portuguese Celebration June 7, while the Queen Coronation and dance will start at 8:30 p.m. at the S.D.E.S. Hall, 695 Seventh St. On Sunday, June 8, the parade will commence at 10 a.m. from the S.D.E.S. Hall and proceed to Sacred Hearth Church for 11 a.m. Mass. Hollister Airshow coming
The city is hosting the Hollister Airshow this Father’s Day weekend. Show Dad a good old-fashioned time on June 14 and 15. The event will be held at the Hollister Municipal Airport on San Felipe Road. Gates open at 9 a.m. and the show begins at 11 a.m. with the singing of the National Anthem and the flag drop. Other events include acrobatic aerial performances, experimental and classic aircraft static displays, stunts performed on a Harley Davidson Motorcycle and even a Jet car, new this year. Come see who wins when this jet car races traditional aircraft. Food vendors, as well as aviation promotional groups and local non-profit organizations, will be easily accessible to our guests. Additionally there is free seating in the viewing area, available on a first-come first-served basis. It is set for the Hollister Airport, 90 Airport Drive. July 4 block parties
Anyone wishing to close a street in the City of Hollister (a public right of way) for a block party at any time, especially for 4th of July celebrations, must have permission from the City of Hollister. Applications are available in the City Clerk=s Office, City Hall, 375 Fifth St., or by calling the City Clerk’s Office at (831) 636-4300, extension 16. Applicants must submit a completed application for a block party as well as an executed “Hold Harmless Agreement,” both of which are available from the City Clerk’s Office, as well as a certificate of Insurance naming the City of Hollister as an additional insured. Certificates of Insurance are usually available from a resident’s home owners insurance company. Normally a request for a block party is required to be submitted 30 days prior to an event. However, due to increased requests for 4th of July Block Party Permits and scheduled Hollister City Council meetings, all completed applications for a Block Party Permit for this 4th of July must be submitted to the City Clerk’s Office no later than June 5 at 5 p.m.
Pancake biker breakfast
The Hollister United Methodist Church at Fifth and Monterey streets is presenting its All You Can Eat Breakfast for the Hollister Rally motorcycle event. It is set for July 4, 5 and 6 at the church and includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, orange juice and coffee. It is $12 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. VFW golf tourney
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9242 is hosting a golf tournament June 20 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club with all proceeds benefiting local veterans. Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. Shotgun starts at 11 a.m. It is $125 per person or $500 per team. It is a four-person scrambled format. Entry includes tee prices, golf cart and dinner with raffle prizes and awards. There are two hole-in-one prizes, a $25,000 prize donated by Leandro Galaz with 10% donated back to the VFW post and a 2014 Chevy Cruze donated by Greenwood Chevrolet. Class of ’71 fundraiser
The seventh annual Class of 1971 scholarship fundraiser will be held July 12, noon to 4 p.m. at the Bolado Park Golf Club. This luncheon is the major fundraising event for raising money for scholarships awarded to graduating seniors from San Benito High School who have plans to further their education at a college, university, technical school or vocational school. Since 2009, the 1971 Baler alumni have awarded a grand total of $12,000 to 10 Balers. The summer luncheon will include a silent auction and a raffle. Tickets are $25 per person. Sacred Heart Hall of Distinction
Sacred Heart School Foundation is again seeking nominations for its “Hall of Distinction” award presented annually in November during the Celebrating Catholic Education dinner at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Alumni, friends, faculty or staff members, current parents, alumni parents, board members or parishioners can make nominations. Once an individual has been nominated he/she shall remain eligible for three years. Nomination forms can be found in the church vestibules of Sacred Heart, St. Benedict, Immaculate Conception and San Juan Mission as well as in the Sacred Heart School office and the Sacred Heart Church pastoral office. The deadline for making nominations is June 30, 2014. Awards will be given out on Saturday, November 1, 2014. Mark your calendar now so that you can join us for dinner and the awards ceremony!
