Street Festival this weekend
The Hollister Downtown Association celebrates the 28th Annual Street Festival and Car Show on Saturday, July 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Historic Downtown Hollister. This family-friendly event features free admission, an automotive swap meet, free watermelon, Kid’s Zone, approximately 200 show cars, food concessions, youth performances, live entertainment, specialty vehicles, beer and wine garden and more. Fracking speaker
Calvin Tillman, former Republican mayor of Dish, Texas, is set for a speech titled, “Why Fracking Made Me Move,” at noon July 26 at Sunnyslope Elementary School’s auditorium, 1475 Memorial Drive, Hollister. Tillman will speak about leaving Dish while fearing the effects of fracking on his family’s health, according to an announcement from the San Benito Rising campaign, which is pushing for a ban against fracking and other high-intensity forms of extraction, along with an outright ban against petroleum activities in certain residential zones. Candidates seminar
For those interested in running for political office, a candidate seminar is secheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 24 at the Hall of Records in the old courthouse, 440 Fifth St., room 101. The elections department is inviting residents and will provide an overview of the process to file documents, essential elements of campaign finance laws, deadlines and duties of candidates. Casino trip
The Hollister Senior Center is having a fundraising trip to Table Mountain and Chukchansi Indian Casinos on Aug. 2. Departure is 6:30 a.m. from the community center, 300 West St. The price is $30 per person with each participant getting $5 in free play at Table Mountain and $10 in free play and food at Chukchansi.
