‘The Addams Family’
San Benito Stage Company presents: “The Addams Family” The weird and wonderful family comes to devilishly delightful life when the story unfolds into every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. This musical is performed by local teens ages 13-19 and is playing at the Granada Theatre on Fifth Street in Hollister, closing on Nov. 15th. Lights On Celebration
The Hollister Downtown Association invites you to attend its 24th Annual Lights On Celebration, on Nov. 29. This family-friendly community event brings up to 10,000 people to downtown. This year’s parade theme is “The Magic of Christmas!” and will be led by Jaime the Elf. The celebration continues to be a day-long event with the Holiday Boutique open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., the return of the car show from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (entry fee is a new, unwrapped toy), and the parade starts at 5:30 p.m. Continuing are the traditional lights in the trees, bright red bows on lighted wreaths and local community entertainment. Holiday Boutique
The United Methodist Church is hosting its Holiday Boutique from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Hollister United Methodist Church at Fifth and Monterey streets. It will include many handmade gifts, jams, jellies, salsa, pickles, baked goods and seasonal decorations. There will be complimentary tea, coffee and cookies with raffle prizes. Arts Council’s new space
The council previously called the now-closed Blak Sage Gallery of Fine Art at 727 San Benito St., but now they have an arts hub of their very own at 240 Fifth St. The council’s current exhibition – “El Teatro Campesino: A Retrospective” – was on display and includes masks; film and theater posters; and photos from the famous theater group’s archives. The exhibit will run through Nov. 14 and focuses on El Teatro Campesino’s work and impact in San Benito County. Dream Catcher program
The San Benito County Community Services and Workforce Development Department announces that it has received funding to assist children and youth enroll in enrichment activities including recreation, sports, tutoring, music, art programs and after school activities. The DREAM CATCHER PROGRAM will provide scholarships to low-income children and youth to participate in enrichment activities. Without this financial support, hundredths of children and youth will be unable to participate in these programs, especially during the times when left more unsupervised during the summer, school breaks and after school hours. According to law enforcement agencies and the health department, the result of children of low-income families being unable to take advantage of community enrichment activities is a health and safety risk by exposure to gangs and other criminal activity. By participating in these activities, children and youth will increase their self-esteem, feel connected to their peers, increase academic performance, make wise choices and better prepare them for success in adulthood. According to census data, 18.1 percent of the under 18 age population are growing up in homes that are 200 percent below the poverty level in San Benito County. The majority of these families cannot afford to pay fees for their children to participate in the social and recreational activities being sponsored by the project. Children and Youth will have access to this program through referrals from probation, school personnel, City of Hollister Recreation, YMCA, Youth Alliance as well as direct application by parents. Low-Income Children and Youth will benefit greatly by being engaged in healthy activities rather than having too much unproductive time which can lead to negative behaviors. The DREAM CATCHER PROGRAM will offer over 200 scholarships to low income families that qualify based on family size and income. The program will run for the period of October, 2014 through May, 2015 or as soon as funds are depleted. Retired teachers meeting
The San Benito County Chapter of California Retired Teachers will hold its next general business meeting at San Juan Oaks at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 3. It will include a silent auction with proceeds going to the Community Food Bank. A Christmas luncheon will be served after the meeting.

Gavilan theater
This year the Gavilan College Children’s Theatre has based their production on classic American folktales such as Sweet Betsey from Pike, a pioneer tale about traveling out west to California, Mistress Murray & her Daughters, a colonial tale about brave women helping to save General Washington’s Troops, Gallymanders, Gallymanders, a story about honesty and owning up to your actions, Asphet, an American Cinderella story, and Casey at the Bat, about America’s favorite pastime. Guests will also enjoy singing along to great classics like She’ll be Coming Around the Mountain, Sweet Betsey from Pike, and Take Me Out to the Ball Game. The show is followed by a reception with the cast and the director, Dennis Beasley. This production is fun and entertainment for people of all ages. It will be held at the Gavilan College Theater at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. in Gilroy at 2 p.m. Nov. 22. Advanced tickets are at the Gavilan bookstore and BookSmart in Morgan Hill. Prices are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $30 for a family pack of two adults and two children. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
