Santana exhibit Santa Cruz County Bank will host a solo exhibit of Manuel Santana through Sept. 30 in four different Santa Cruz County Bank offices. The exhibit will feature 60 original works of art by Santana, who was named the 2008 Artist of the Year for Santa Cruz County. The exhibit will run Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. excluding holidays through Sept. 30. “What I Did in Summer Camp” Original artwork created by children attending the Monterey Museum of Art’s summer Art Discovery Camp will be on display through Oct. 10 in the Youth Art Gallery at the museum, 559 Pacific St. The camp sessions introduced art projects focused on themes of pirates, treasure and imagination as well as art and nature, bookmaking and journaling. Battle of the Bands San Benito High School’s Guitar Rock Band Club will host a Battle of the Bands event tonight from 6-10 p.m. at the high school auditorium. Expected performers include Noise Complaint, Inevitably Spicy, Baptised in Blood, Bear and Bull Fights and BEEFTONE as well as a special guest performance by Primordially Poised. Tickets are $5 in advance and are available at the high school’s student center or $7 at the door.
Scout-o-Rama Learn about scouting in San Benito County at the annual Scout-o-Rama today at Veterans Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include a district pinewood derby at noon as well as a monkey bridge, a catapult, a rain gutter regatta, arts and crafts, the annual flag retirement and a concession stand. This event is open to the public as well as current scouts and their friends. Scouting is open to all boys in grades K-5 (Cub Scouts) or ages 11-18 (Boy Scouts).
Renaissance Faire The 2008 Northern California Renaissance Faire is now open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Casa de Fruta, 10031 Pacheco Pass Hwy. This one-of-a-kind event, hosted by Play Faire Productions, introduces visitors to exciting world between 1490 and 1630 by providing a living history event that includes live comedy, improvisation, music, dramatic performances, pirate invasions, and a Celtic weekend.
The faire will run weekends through Sunday, Oct. 12. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children ages 5-12 years; children 5 years of age or younger are admitted free. A weekend pass, which covers the admission for one weekend, is $35 per adult. A “Fairever” pass, which allows unlimited access for all 12 days of the faire, is $150 per person. Sand castle contest The 47th annual Great Sand Castle contest will be held today beginning at 8 a.m. at Carmel Beach. This event is free to all participants. Registration will begin on the beach the morning of the event and judging will begin at 2 p.m. Participants are advised to build their castles between Tenth and Twelfth streets to insure entries are within contest boundaries. Coastal Clean-up Coyote-Bear Park will participate in the annual California Coastal Clean-up event today by hosting its own clean-up effort in various areas around Coyote Lake. Volunteers are needed to help with this event from 9 a.m. to noon starting at the Blacktail Picnic Area, where assignments will be handed out. Morning refreshments will be served. Bird Walk The Coyote Creek Bird Walk will be held today from 9-11 a.m. along Coyote Creek. Salinas Airshow Tickets are now on sale for the 2008 Salinas Airshow, which opens today at 9 a.m. at the Salinas Municipal Airport. Flying begins at 11 a.m. This event will include flying displays by U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, a U.S. Navy FA-18 Hornet, an Air Force F-15 Strike Eagle, the SkyHawks Canadian Forces Parachute Team, Sean D. Tucker & the Oracle Challenger, the Collaborators and the Indy Kids Jet School Bus as well as military & civilian static displays. Advance general admission tickets are $16 for adults or $12 for children ages 6-12 years. General admission at the gate is $19 for adults and $15 for children ages 6-12 years.
