The San Benito Stage Company performance of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factor” runs April 16 through May 1 at the Granada Theater, in Hollister. Shows are April 16,17, 23,24, 30 and May 1 at 7 p.m. and April 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for children and $12 for seniors. Every show will have a golden ticket hidden in the candy sold at intermission. Annual spring clean-up
The Hollister Downtown Association is looking for volunteers for its annual spring clean-up April 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H clubs, church groups and others looking for community service opportunities are invited to participate. Spring wine celebration and barbecue
The Wineries of Santa Clara Valley will host their Spring Wine Celebration and Barbecue April 24, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Casa de Fruta Country Park. Tickets are $50 per person. Open Artists Studios Tour
The San Benito County Open Artists Studios Tour is April 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local artists in Hollister, Aromas and San Juan Bautista will open up their studios to the public. Cactus and succulent show
The Monterey Bay Area Cactus and Succulent Society will be hosting a cactus and succulent show April 24-25, in the courtyard of Jardines Restaurant, 115 Third St., in San Juan Bautista, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show is a chance to see a variety of plants. ‘Path of the Padres’
The “Path of the Padres” hikes will be held on some Fridays and most Saturdays and Sundays starting on Feb. 27 and will continue through April 18. The hikes are open to the public, ages 6 years and older by advance reservation only. School group hikes may be arranged during the week. School group reservations and general public reservations are now open. At least 10 people must be involved in the hike to be able to conduct a tour. The hike begins at the Los Banos Creek Reservoir boat launch ramp at 8 a.m. and returns to the ramp at about 3:30 p.m. To make a reservation, call (209)-826-1197 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be a reservation fee of $12 per person 12 years old, and $7 per child age 6-12. A family of 5 may reserve space for 2 adults and 3 children for $30. On the day of the hike visitors must pay the State Park day use parking fee of $10 per car upon entry. Opera San Jose will be showing “La rondine (The Swallow)” April 24 through May 9, at the California Theatre, 345 South First St., in downtown San Jose. The opera by Giacomo Puccini follows the beautiful mistress of a wealthy Parisian banker when she tries to recapture magic by running off with a young man who reminds her of a handsome stranger she met long ago. Performances are April 24, 29, May 1, 4 and 7 at 8 p.m. and April 25, May 2 and 9 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $51-91, including a city facility usage fee. San Benito County 4-H clubs will be hosting a pancake breakfast at the Elks Lodge. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice and coffee. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
Sign-ups for football and cheer
The San Benito Cardinals will be hosting signs up for the Nor-Cal Youth Football Conference and Cheer teams April 25 and May 29, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Straw Hat Pizza in Hollister and Pizza Factory in San Juan Bautista. Fremont Peak Day
For the 104th year, the anniversary of the first raising of the American flag on California soil by John C. Fremont will be celebrated at Fremont Peak. From 11 a.m. to mid-afternoon, Veterans of Foreign Wars District 12 and the Native Daughters of the Golden West will host the celebration, which will feature a barbecue and flag-raising at the top of the peak at noon by Girl Scouts and a park ranger. The VFW will perform a ceremony, offer speeches and then invite children to participate in old-fashioned games such as a water-balloon toss, spoon and egg relays and coin scrambles. Spring Festival
The annual Spring Festival that has been a tradition for 50 years in Pajaro Valley is being held at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, at 2401 East Lake Ave. There will be music, food, a drawing and games. The food at the event consists of a barbecued chicken feast with ravioli, salad, rolls, a beverage and dessert. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend anytime from noon to 5 p.m. Dinner is $15 each and are available for takeout. Car seat checkup
San Benito County Child Injury Prevention, First 5 San Benito and the CHP will host a car seat checkup April 29, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the K-Mart parking lot, 491 Tres Pinos Road, in Hollister. Staff will help families learn how to safely install booster seats, convertibles and infant seats. People are asked to bring the child in a safety seat, in the vehicle that will be used most often. Low-cost car seats will be available for purchase with cash. Residents should bring proof of income in the form of a WIC card, Medi-cal card or pay stubs. The wait can be up to 45 minutes. The Court Appointed Special Advocates of San Benito County will be hosting the third annual HeArt of CASA fundraiser in support of child advocacy. ‘Treasure Island’
The 2010 Forest Theater Guild’s Centennial Season will be presenting Treasure Island the play in Carmel at the Outdoor Forest Theater from May 28 to June 20. Treasure Island is a story about a band of unsavory pirates who are pitted against the young hero Jim Hawkins. The tale is told through the eyes of Hawkins aboard the Hispaniola guided by a treasure map to Treasure Island. Tickets will begin being sold in late February.
