Baler Summer Nights
The Baler Backers Athletic Organization is hosting the second
annual Baler Summer Nights Aug. 22 at the Bolado Park Pavilion.
Tickets are $65 per seat or $500 for a table for eight. The event
includes a dinner, dance, no-host bar, silent and live auction,
raffles and more. Ticket sales, sponsorship reservations and
donation collection have started. The event raises money for the 23
athletic programs on campus that service more than 740 student
athletes. Be swept away to Tahiti for the evening and enjoy a
delicious dinner catered by Thyme Market and dance to the great
sounds of the Shan Johnson Band. Be sure to get your tickets early
as this year’s event will sell out quickly. Tickets can be

Rock Soup hike Christopher Crockett, a senior park ranger with at Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park, will be leading a hike Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon called “Rock Soup.” The hike will include a discussion of the rocks in the park and landforms associated with the strike-slip Calaveras Fault that runs through the park. Those who would like to participate can meet at the Mendoza Ranch parking area on Roop Road, east of Gilroy by 8:45 a.m. The hike will be 3.5 miles along the Coyote Ridge and Mendoza trails. Drive-thru chicken barbecue

Pet Friends will be hosting a drive-thru barbecue Sunday, Aug. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pet Friends Center, 2975 Buena Vista Road. Outdoor movie series continues

“Hairspray” Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) just wants a chance to dance on the Corny Collins show in this musical set in 1950s Baltimore. Her mother Edna (played by a cross-dressing John Travolta) wants her daughter to aim low, while father Wilbur Turnblad (Christopher Walken) encourages her to pursue her dreams of dancing on an integrated show with whites and blacks alike. Starring Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer and Amanda Bynes. The show is set for Thursday after 9 p.m. at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Admission is free. Charity Golf Classic

Communications Unlimited and the Hollister community are partnering with local businesses to raise money for three charities, including Standing in the Gap-Now, Compassion Pregnancy and Emmaus House. The Charity Golf Classic will be held Aug. 28, at the Diablo Golf Course at Ridgemark with $2,500 in prizes. It will include a barbecue lunch, games and entertainment followed by an evening dinner and dance. Tickets are $150 for all events, or $500 for four. Movies in the Park

The San Juan Bautista Historic Park Plaza Lawn will be the venue for a screening of the 1959 Western “Rio Bravo” staring John Wayne, Dean Martin and Claude Akins. The movie tells the tale of a sheriff of a small town who has to keep custody of a powerful rancher’s brother. The viewing is free to the public. Master gardens tour The Monterey Bay Master Gardeners will hold its annual tour Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme this year is “Garden Sanctuaries of the Monterey Peninsula.” The self-guided tour features nine private gardens, including cottage gardens, wooded coastal landscapes and historic sites. 11th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

The YMCA of San Benito County will host its 11th annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, 3800 Airline Hwy., Friday, Sept. 18.
