Mission 10
The Hollister Rotary Club will hold the Mission 10, a 10-mile
and 5-K race, Jan. 29. The run is in its 28th year and proceeds go
to local charities. The races begin at the San Juan Mission, taking
runners through farm land and up through the Anzar hills. The
10-mile run starts at 10 a.m. and the 5K begins at 10:15 a.m. Those
who register after Jan. 25 or on the day of the event will pay $27.

Dale Yarmuth display up

Local artist Dale A. Yarmuth will have watercolor and pen and ink paintings on display at Mars Hill Coffee Shop through Jan. 31. Yarmuth has been an artist for more than 30 years, and attended Ferris State University, majoring in commercial art with a minor in marketing. He is a member of the Hollister Art League and the San Benito County Arts Council. He has won numerous awards for his paintings entered at the San Benito County Fair, including “Best of Show,” for his watercolor/pen ink of “Lilies” and “The Bodie Church.” He teaches continuing education classes at Gavilan College and is presently holding painting classes in his home in Hollister. Gero Heine exhibit

Gero Heine, a multiple award-winning wildlife and nature photographer, will have photos on display at the Blak Sage Gallery of Fine Art, through Jan. 29. Visitors have a chance to see Heine’s “Bison” image that will be on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Spring 2011.

Wildlife search and rescue training

A training and recruitment session on Wildlife Search and Rescue will be held Jan. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Morgan Hill Police Department, 16200 Vineyard Blvd., in Morgan Hill. Those who attend will learn what to do when they come face to face with a wild animal that is in trouble and needs help. Attendees can become a part of a team of trained and qualified rescuers who respond to emergencies involving wildlife. The lecture part of the class covers laws and regulations governing wildlife rescue, human safety and animal safety concerns, capture strategies, proper animal handling techniques, basic first aid for wildlife accident victims and initial care of healthy wild babies. The afternoon portion of the program gives students the opportunity to try equipment and practice their skills with Robo-Duck. The class is $40. Mark Patton will be hosting a special presentation on “Acts of Mindfulness” Jan. 29 at 1 p.m., at 920 Riverside Road. A ‘Tribute to ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’

The Paper Wing Theatre presents a tribute to “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” The story is based on Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ with the adventures of Everett Ulysses McGill and his companions Delmar and Pete, who are sprung from a chain gang and try to reach Everett’s home to recover their buried loot. An Evening in Tuscany

Sacred Heart Parish School will host its annual fundraiser, “An Evening in Tuscany,” Feb. 5, at Bolado Park Pavilion. Science Alive open to middle schoolers

Gavilan College will host Science Alive, a one-day conference of hands-on science workshops for middle school students in grades 6-8. More than 300 students attend the workshops from around the Bay Area each year. Students can choose from 22 different workshops, including Magic with Physics, Build a Hovercraft, CSI: Where the Evidence Never Lies, and more. Registration is $10 and includes workshops and lunch. Students who participate in free, or subsidized meal programs automatically qualify for a fee waiver. Check in is 7:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., at the Gavilan College Student Center, in Gilroy. The students will participate in three workshops before lunch, then watch a physics show in the afternoon before participating in a raffle and door prizes. Coyote Creek Bird Walk

Jane Haley, a National Park Service docent and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (W.E.R.C) will continue her series of bird walks Feb. 5, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The walk will continue along Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill. The participants will have the chance to view migratory birds as well as observe the local birds, their habitat and ecological importance. Because of the terrain, the walks are not recommended for children. The programs are free but space is limited and reservations are required. Path of the Padres hikes start up

Reservations are open for the Path of the Padres Hikes at San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area. The hikes take place most Saturdays and Sundays, from Feb. 16 to April 23, as well as some Fridays. The path through the Diablo Range is so named because it was taken by the padres as they came from Mission San Juan Bautista 35 miles along the Los Banos Creek, and into the Central Valley in the early 1800s. Participants will see plants that grow along the creek as well as animals will they learn about California history. The hikes are open to the public, ages 6 years and older, by advance reservation only, with a group of 10 needed to conduct the tour. The hike begins at the Los Banos Creek Reservoir boat launch ramp at 8 a.m. and returns at 3:30 p.m. A pontoon boat carries passengers for about 30 to 40 minute to the west end of the reservoir. Along the way, short stops are made so hikers can observe wildlife along the shoreline. The hike is five miles round trip and is moderately strenuous. It takes about five hours. Sturdy footgear is recommended and hikers should carry a lunch and a minimum of two quarts of water. A reservation fee of $12 is paid for those over $12 or $7 per child, age 6 to 12. A family of five may reserve space for two adults and three children for $30. Parking is $10 per car. For more information, call 209-826-1197.

Bach to Blues

Gavilan College will host the Bach to Blues concert, featuring the Watsonville Taiko, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The concert is an annual showcase of regional talent, featuring Gavilan College faculty, students and performers from the community. This year’s special guest performers are the Watsonville Taiko, a drumming community that combines folklore, mythology and symbolism. Other artists include pianist Maria Amirkhanian, flamenco guitarist Alberto Marques, blues guitarist John Garica, voice instructor Nate Pruitt and winner of the Marian Filice youth piano competition.
