The Garlic Festival Association is once again putting out the call for local young woman who think they have what it takes to be the shining ambassador for Gilroy’s world-renown extravaganza dedicated to the stinking rose.
Contestants are now sought for the 36th Annual Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant. Applications can be picked up at the Garlic Festival office located at 7474 Monterey Street, or by downloading one at www.gilroygarlicfestival.com.
This event is a scholarship pageant, and contestants are judged on personal interviews, a speech, talent and evening gown. A new garlic queen will be crowned and scholarships will be awarded to many pageant contestants.
Scholarships
The Garlic Festival Association will award $1,000 to the queen; $500 to the first runner-up; $250 to the Second Runner-up; a Past President’s Scholarship; and a Past Queen’s Scholarship.
Christopher Ranch will also award scholarships: $3,000 to the queen; $2,000 to the first runner-up; and $1,000 to the second runner-up. Other awards include the Franca Barsi Miss Gilroy Garlic 1986 Memorial Scholarship.
Rules
Applicants must be a resident of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista or Aromas; a single female who has never been married and has no children; a high school graduate by June 2014; and between the ages of 18 to 24 by July 2014. Deadline to submit a completed application is no later than 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2014.
The Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Pageant is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at the Gavilan College Theater.
