The San Benito Cardinals, of American Youth Football, announced the groundbreaking of their new home field at Anzar High School in San Juan Bautista last week.

“We couldn’t ask for a better place to hold our home games” said Diane Castaneda, president of the Cardinals. “The San Juan-Aromas School District has been very kind to us and we are so grateful to them for making this happen.”

Last year Joseph Reyes, head of operations at Anzar High School, spoke about the project to Castaneda and Jessie Mansmith, vice president of the Cardinals.

It has taken months of planning and scheduling of equipment to remove the old sod from the field.

Tony Alameda, of San Juan, came forward and volunteered to start the project and oversee it. Hollister’s Frank Casillas also helped in coordinating the trucks and helpers to take the sod to its dumping area.

Two weeks of hard work has paid off and now the ground is ready for cultivating, fertilizing and re-crowning.

A set of goal posts have been donated from a Hollister business.

Appliances have also been donated from Phil Fortino, which will be used in the new concession stand that will be built soon. A scoreboard is also being ordered for the field.
