Chamberlain’s Children Center will conduct a dedication ceremony for the Mari Davis Memorial Park on November 19 at 11 a.m at 1850 San Benito St., according to a press release from the organization.
All members of the public are invited. The park, which is being re-named in Davis’ honor, was created through the efforts of the first Leadership San Benito class as a playground for the children at Chamberlain’s Children Center.
Dozens of local residents, businesses and organizations contributed to Leadership’s efforts in 2005-06 and transformed an area of dust and weeds into an area where approximately 24 children living at Chamberlain’s can play softball, run on grass, and swing on swings.
Davis, who was active in the business and nonprofit community for years, was a president on the Chamberlain’s board. She also was named the most recent Woman of the Year by the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce.
“This playground represents the good will and community spirit of Hollister residents. Mari Davis’ dedication to Chamberlain’s children also exemplified outstanding community service. We want to honor Mari’s spirit by re-naming the playground in her honor,” said Nancy Kops, current president of Chamberlain’s Board of Directors.
Prior to the dedication, Chamberlain’s Children Center is inviting residents to stop by Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for its quarterly Work Day. The event will focus on a park and playground clean-up, weed pulling and pantry shelf building.
“We are continuously looking for opportunities to involve the community and invite them on-site, so a work day is an excellent opportunity to achieve both,” said Robert Freiri, the executive director. “Also we are getting the park ready for our Park Dedication at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19 when we rename the park ‘Mari Davis Memorial Park.'”
