The California Highway Patrol will be conducting a free child safety seat inspection Thursday, Feb. 12 at the Target parking lot in Hollister.

The CHP, working with the Safe Kids Coalition, will be holding the inspection between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., said CHP Officer Terry Mayes.

“Our primary goal is to educate the public,” Mayes said. “There will not be any enforcement action – we’re there to provide service and free assistance.”

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on site checking for proper installation and use of child safety seats, according to a CHP-issued statement.

“We’re hoping to have a huge turnout,” Mayes said. “It’s an opportunity not only for the public to get educated, but 95 percent of seats are improperly installed. You’re asking for your child to become severely injured with a minor crash.”

People are encouraged to call the CHP and make an appointment beforehand, minimizing their wait in line and ensuring a more efficient transaction, Mayes said.

The CHP has some seats to give away, but there is a limited supply. The recipient must come with a child, a faulty seat and a car or they will not be eligible for a seat, Mayes said.

“You can’t just show up and say I need a child seat,” she said. “If they’re in dire financial need we will help them. Our concept is that we want to get those unsafe seats out of the mainstream.”

The event is being held in memory of the late Janet Graham, honoring her commitment to child safety.
