A Recology dump truck drops off a load of garbage at the John Smith Road Landfill.

Hollister officials Monday will weigh a three-year extension to the garbage contract with Recology while helping to prepare for stricter regulations ahead pertaining to green and food-waste collection.
Council members will consider the extension at their 5 p.m. Monday meeting at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St. The three-year extension affirms the second portion of a 10-year franchise deal – the first seven years in the agreement are up next June – between the city and company for garbage and recycling collection.
The agenda report goes on to stress that the city and other communities must prepare for regulatory changes, such as organics being banned in landfills. As for green waste, service is currently voluntary. A bill passed in 2012, meanwhile, mandates a 75 percent recycling goal by 2020.
The county board, meanwhile, is scheduled to consider the three-year extension at supervisors’ meeting Tuesday as well.
