The Highway 25 bypass through Hollister is set to open for traffic between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, a transportation official announced today.

The long-awaited opening to the road will come 10 days after the official ribbon-cutting for the bypass, while the construction has been under way since late April 2007.

Mary Dinkuhn, transportation planning manager for the Council of San Benito County Governments, told county supervisors today the agency will work in conjunction with the Hollister Police Department and the California Highway Patrol on additional enforcement when the road opens.

The 2.6-mile stretch, which has been debated for 40-plus years, is a four-lane road that extends east from the Bolsa-San Felipe Road intersection about a quarter of a mile, then runs south crossing Santa Ana Road, Meridian Street and Hillcrest Road. From there, the bypass becomes a six-lane roadway and connects with Airline Highway at the Sunnyslope Tres Pinos Road intersection.
